There’s a very specific kind of ache that comes with watching your child struggle with something you can’t physically see.
They’re standing right in front of you, but you can tell something feels unsettled inside them.
Maybe their little heart starts beating faster.
Maybe their shoulders tense.
Maybe tears come suddenly and they can’t quite explain why.
And as moms, that instinct rises instantly:
How do I fix this?
I’ve walked through moments like this more times than I can count.
One of my girls has always felt things deeply. She was never dramatic or “too much,” just a tender-hearted, deeply sensitive soul. The kind of child who notices everything, absorbs everything, and sometimes feels overwhelmed by sensations she couldn’t quite put into words.
In the early years, those moments used to rattle me.
I wanted answers.
Anything that might help.
But over time, I learned something that gently changed the way I responded:
Not every overwhelming moment needs a solution. Sometimes it just needs support.

🌿 What Helped Most in Our Home
Every child is different, but here are some of the simple things that made a meaningful difference for our girls.
🌬 Breathing Together
Instead of telling them to calm down, we’d breathe together.
Slow, steady breaths.
Side by side.
Because children often settle when we settle.
☀️ Stepping Outside
After things softened a bit, a change of space often helped.
Fresh air. Natural light. A little breathing room.
No expectations.
No pressure to talk.
Sometimes that alone shifted things.
🤍 Prayer & Reassurance
Prayer also became part of these moments.
Just gentle, steady words spoken softly.
Peace, comfort, safety.
It grounded me as much as it grounded them.
🌿 Comfort Rituals
One of the most meaningful supports we discovered was an essential oil blend called Valor.
I first learned about it as a blend often associated with feelings of courage and emotional steadiness. I remember thinking, “That sounds exactly like what my girls needed.”
At the time, my girls were just 3 and 13.
During tense or overwhelming moments, I would gently roll Valor along their spines, place a drop in their little hands, and have them sit quietly while breathing it in.
It became a ritual they came to recognize.
A familiar aroma.
At bedtime, we’d sometimes add a few drops to Epsom salts and stir them into a warm bath. The warm water and quiet atmosphere became a gentle transition into rest.
And truthfully, this blend made such a noticeable difference that they both still reach for it today.
🔇 Softening the Environment
When emotions ran high, we’d often lower stimulation around them.
Dimmer lights
Less noise
A calmer space
Sometimes their little bodies simply needed less input.
🌿 Equally Important Shift
Looking back, so many of the things we learned and incorporated helped my girls in meaningful ways.
The breathing. The prayer. The comfort rituals.
All of it mattered.
But something else quietly shaped those moments too.
It was how I showed up.
When I stayed calm instead of scrambling
When I softened instead of rushed
When I responded instead of reacted
The moments felt different.
Because our children don’t just hear our words.
They feel our presence.
🌿 Now Watching It With My Granddaughter
It hasn’t always been easy to watch, but it’s been incredibly tender seeing glimpses of that same deep sensitivity in my granddaughter.
And once again, the simplest things seem to matter most.
A long, tight hug.
Steady presence.
Familiar aromas.
Reassuring words.
Just safety and connection.
🌿 A Gentle Reminder for Moms
If your child has moments where their feelings seem bigger than the situation…
Please know you’re not alone.
Some children simply feel life more intensely.
And often, what helps most isn’t finding the perfect strategy…
It’s being a calm, steady presence beside them.
Big feelings are part of being human.
And the grounded love of a safe parent can be more powerful than we sometimes realize.
Until next time sweet Mommas,
